A year ago, Francis Bernard's cross-country season came to a shocking premature end at the WECSSAA championships held at Malden Park.
As Bernard was negotiating the hill that is part of the senior girls' five-kilometre route, a bone in her right foot simply gave out and broke.
She didn't trip, didn't roll an ankle.
