Brennen McHenry, a Texas-bound senior at Brophy College Prep and the only athlete in Arizona high school history to clear both 7 feet (2.14m) in the high jump and surpass 24 feet (7.31m) in the long jump, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in the invitational section of both events April 8 at the 55th Arcadia Invitational at Arcadia High in California. McHenry, who boasts a personal-best 24-4.50 (7.43m) in the long jump along with his 7-foot high jump clearance, is looking to become the first athlete since Mike Morrison of Willingboro High in New Jersey in 2003 to win both competitions at Arcadia. Willingboro set the meet record with a 7-3 (2.21m) high jump clearance and produced a 24-3.50 (7.40m) effort in the long jump. McHenry is also the first male athlete in the country since Jakobe Ford of Shadle Park High in Washington in 2017 to reach 7 feet and 24 feet in the same season. He revisits a fourth-place finish with a 6-7 (2.00m) clearance in the invitational high jump last year and how meaningful it is to have the opportunity to compete in both events at Arcadia this season. McHenry also reflects on his early morning fall training and how that has been instrumental in his development and improvement this year. He expresses gratitude to the Brophy Prep coaching staff and his many other mentors, along with his family, for their support throughout his career. McHenry explains how valuable film study has been in his preparation, along with visualization exercises and the strength of his faith. He speaks about the decision to attend Texas and his excitement to collaborate with the Longhorns' coaching staff, in addition to the program's eventual move to the Southeastern Conference during his collegiate career, and how the opportunity to compete against international student-athletes provides additional motivation.
