Maggie Ewen, a Nike professional athlete and the world leader in the women's shot put at 67-1.25 (20.45m) as well as No. 5 among global competitors this year in the women's hammer throw at 246-5 (75.10m), joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss competing in both events July 8-9 at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Ewen ranks No. 3 in American history in the shot put and No. 7 all-time among U.S. competitors in the hammer throw with her personal-best performances this year. She reflects on her shot put victory June 24 at the USATF NYC Grand Prix with a mark of 64-5 (19.68m), in addition to examining her consistency of surpassing the 19-meter barrier nine times in 10 competitions this year. Ewen revisits achieving her lifetime-best shot put effort May 27 at the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix at UCLA's Drake Stadium, and the feeling of relief after finally eclipsing the 20-meter mark for the first time. She speaks about her decision to return to the hammer throw last year following a break from the event and how encouraged Ewen has been with the progress and development, especially with her best career performance May 18 at the Tucson Elite Classic in Arizona. Ewen analyzes the depth of both the shot put and hammer throw fields in Eugene, and how the depth the American women's throwing has improved, especially last year with all four event groups achieving at least one medal at the World Athletics Championships. She explains how special it is that the U.S. will be able to send four female athletes in both the hammer throw and shot put to the World Athletics Championships, scheduled for Aug. 19-27, in Budapest, Hungary, with Brooke Andersen being the reigning gold medalist in the hammer and Chase Ealey in the shot put, in addition to Ewen's motivation to qualify in both events. She also speaks about her friendship with Ealey and their shared pursuit of surpassing Michelle Carter's American shot put record of 67-8 (20.63m), as the Nos. 2 and 3 all-time U.S. competitors. Ewen also shares her excitement for the Diamond League final to be part of the Prefontaine Classic this year Sept. 16-17 at Hayward Field, in addition to the potential for her and Ealey to also compete in October at the Pan American Games in October and November in Santiago, Chile.
