USATF Night of Legends to feature Hall of Fame Inductees, ’68 Olympic Team and annual Best in Sport awards

9/11/2018

INDIANAPOLIS -- USA Track & Field is bringing its Hall of Fame induction ceremony back to the USATF Annual Meeting for a Night of Legends gala. The 2018 celebration includes a special tribute to the 1968 Olympic Team as well as the annual Jesse Owens and Jackie Joyner-Kersee Athletes of the Year.

Slated for Saturday, December 1 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus, Ohio, the Night of Legends red carpet opens at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and ceremony at 7 p.m. A special autograph opportunity with all of the evening’s honorees will take place immediately after. USATF’s 2018 Nike Coach of the Year, Masters Athlete of the Year, Youth Athlete of the Year and special Best of 2018 Wing Awards will also be among the honorees.

Tickets are available now for the USATF Night of Legends; those registered for the 2018 Annual Meeting receive a 30 percent discount on tickets. Visit the USATF events page online for ticketing and registration information.

1968-2018: Celebrating Athletic Achievement and Courage

In culmination of a year-long celebration, USATF is honoring the 50th anniversary of the greatest track and field team ever assembled with a special recognition at Night of Legends. The 1968 Olympic Team─with greats such as Madeline Mims, Dick Fosbury, Wyomia Tyus, Tommie Smith, John Carlos, and more─not only won medals in Mexico City, but also set historic records and stood firm against inequality in the fight for social justice.

USATF’s 1968-2018: Celebrating Athletic Achievement and Courage campaign earlier this year included a Q&A panel at the USATF Hershey Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, a screening of NBC’s documentary “1968,” autograph signings and more.

National Track & Field Hall of Fame

The National Track & Field Hall of Fame, housed at the Armory Track & Field Center in New York City, will induct the Class of 2018 at Night of Legends. The newest class will be announced later this fall. An entire list of Hall of Fame members is published online.

Jesse Owens and Jackie Joyner-Kersee Awards

USATF’s highest honor to current athletes will be awarded at Night of Legends. Both the Jesse Owens Award and Jackie Joyner-Kersee Award, given to the top male and female athletes of the year, will be voted on by fans and media members later this year. A list of previous awardees is online. Join the conversation with USATF on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook.
