NORTH DAKOTA STATE MEET

Jamestown's Anthonett Nabwe Sweeps Three Throwing Events

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

The North Dakota State High School Track and Field Championship got a bit of a revamp this spring. For the first time the state championships at the MDU Community Resources Bowl in Bismarck were spread over a three day period– May 26-28 – to allow more rest for athletes and overall flexibility in the schedule. While it was a new format, familiar names emerged throughout the three-day meet.

In the boys Class A race, Century, a DyeStat Dual Meet Championship finalist last year, repeated as team champions with 118 points.

Fargo South’s Austin Zulu, a sophomore, won the 400 (49 seconds), and ran on the winning 4x200 relay (1:28.09) and 4x400 (3:19.12) that broke a state meet record.

West Fargo Sheyenne’s Caeden Johnson (9:19.90) and Aiden Johnson (9:21.04) went 1-2 in the 3,200. Caeden was also third in the 1,600 (4:16.37).

In girls Class A, Davies won the team championship with an impressive 137 points, claiming seven gold medals. This was the program’s fourth team title in five seasons, after finishing runner-up a year ago. Davies junior Cece Deebom led the way, setting an overall state record in the 100 hurdles (14 seconds, set in the prelims) and also claiming the 100 (12.15), 200 (24.41) and long jump (19-01) titles to score 40 points.

Jamestown senior Anthonett Nabwe made it a clean sweep in the throws. The senior won the shot put with a mark of 49-10, a current US#4 mark, as well as the discus (154-7) and javelin (144-9).

Also in the field, Sheyenne’s Emma Briggs won the pole vault (11 feet), which was the program's first girls individual state champion.

The Kindred boys defended the Class B title with 124.50 points. The Vikings dominated the field events, as junior Jack Packer won the shot put (58-05) and discus (164 feet), while teammate Riley Surram was runner-up in the shot (54-4). The Vikings went 1-2 in the high jump.

In the distance events, Hazen senior Ian Busche won the 800 (1:56.71), 1,600 (4:24.57) and 3,200 (9:38.71).

In Class B girls, Central Cass sophomore Elise Wisnewski led the way for her team as it won the team championship with 82 points. The sophomore won the long jump (16-11), 100 (12.62) and was second in the 200 (25.10), and was part of the winning 4x2 (1:43.98).

New Rockford’s sophomore Kelsie Belquist won the 200 in a Class B record time of 24.63S. Belquist added victories in the 100 (14.95) and 300 (43.46) hurdles, ans claimed the 400 dash crown, clocking 57.08.

Eighth grader Brynn Hanson of Des-Lacs Bur pulled off the triple win in the distance events, finishing first in the 3,200 (11:44.20), 1,600 (5:21.13) and 800 (2:20.52).
