Kelsie Belquist Re-Writes Record Book In North Dakota's Class B Meet By Mary Albl of DyeStat Kelsey Belquist is making a case for one of the best track athletes in state history. The standout junior from New Rockford won four individual titles for the second year in a row at the Class B North Dakota State Track and Field Championships held May 26-27 at MDU Community Resources Bowl in Bismarck. In leading New Rockford-Sheyenne to a third place finish, Belquist unseated North Dakota legend Laura Roesler with a new all-time state best 23.94 in the 200 meters. The wind reading was 2.0, which means she got the maximum allowable wind reading for record purposes. She began Saturday with a stunning US#10 time of 41.48 seconds to win the 300-meter hurdles for yet another all-time state best. She had hit the second hurdle and fallen in the prelim but still managed to get up and win her heat to qualify for the final. Belquist also won the 400 (56.56), added another victory in the 100 hurdles in 14.36. In the Class B team race, Central Cass, the 2022 winners tied with Central McLean for the state title, both tallying 82 points. In the distance events, freshman sensation Brynn Hanson of Des-Lacs claimed the 800 (2:17.67), 1,600 (5:18.72) and 3,200 (11:51.74) for the second straight year. The Kindred boys defended the Class B with 124 points. The team dominated the throws with senior Jack Packer winning the shot put (60-1) as Kindred nabbed the top three spots. Junior Riley Surname won the discus for Kindred (171-7), while Palmer was second (156-8). Trey Heinrich won the 300 hurdles (39.97) and 110 hurdles (14.55) for the team. Bowman sophomore Taylor Wanner won the 800 (157:84) and 1,600 (4:20.56), while senior Austin Wanner won the 3,200 (9:38.19). The Davies girls defended their Class A state title with 120.5 points as senior Bariborve “Cece” Deebom led her team with four titles once again. The Nebraska-bound Deebom anchored Davies to a 4x100 relay record (47.97). She added individual wins in the 100 (12.07), 200 (24.54) and 100 hurdles (14.55). In boys Class A action, Century scored 121.50 points to claim the state championship. Legacy senior Dylan McGlothlin dominated the sprints, winning there 100 (10.66), 200 (21.26) and 400 (48.55). Senior Ethan Moe of Williston won the 800 (1:51.98) and 1,600 (4:10.08).
