PALO ALTO, Calif. – Kaela Edwards admitted the hardest part when it comes to pacing training partner Skylyn Webb is making sure she is hitting the required splits for her teammate while practicing in Colorado.

But when it came to Edwards, an adidas professional athlete, setting up Webb – representing Saucony – in the elite section of the women’s 1,500 meters Saturday at the Payton Jordan Invitational, the pair executed flawlessly.

Webb prevailed in a lifetime-best 4 minutes, 6.73 seconds to take over the American outdoor lead this season and hold off a second Venezuelan national record in as many days from Joselyn Brea, who clocked 4:07.27 at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Webb, a three-time NCAA Division 2 champion in the 800 during her career at UC-Colorado Springs now training with Edwards under the guidance of Chad Noelle, improved on her previous-best 4:11.42 from May at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, with Edwards taking the leaders through 1,100 meters in 3:01.1.

Webb ascended to No. 5 in the world this year, with Brea – doubling back following a South American 5,000-meter all-time mark and world-leading 15:05.56 performance Friday – elevating to No. 7 among global competitors, lowering her 2021 national record of 4:12.92 to rise to No. 3 in South American history.

Canadian athlete Kate Current, representing London Western Track and Field, took third in 4:11.87 and Oregon’s Maddy Elmore finished fourth in 4:13.21.

Texas junior Crayton Carrozza, competing in his outdoor opener, edged Nike Bowerman Track Club athlete Cooper Teare by a 1:47.62 to 1:47.63 margin in the men’s 800.

Teare had prevailed in the 1,500 in 3:34.96 in his first outdoor race of the year April 15 at the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University.

Susan Aneno, a former Connecticut standout representing Peninsula Distance Club, triumphed in the women’s elite section of the 800 in 2:03.47, with Washington’s Carley Thomas taking second in 2:04.20, ahead of fellow Australian Izzy Thornton-Bott of Oregon clocking 2:04.36 and Stanford’s Melissa Tanaka placing fourth in 2:04.77.

Iona teammates Damien Dilcher, representing Canada, and French athlete Mael Gouyette took the top two spots in the men’s 1,500.

Dilcher ran a personal-best 3:41.67, with Gouyette clocking 3:42.01 and Sweden’s Johan Rogestedt taking third in 3:42.82.

Mexico’s Paola Moran secured victory in the women’s 400 meters in 51.95.

Michael Ohioze, a British competitor representing City Speed of San Francisco, earned the win in the men’s 400 in 46.62.

Stanford’s Laurel Wong cleared a personal-best 13-8.25 (4.17m) to win the women’s pole vault, with Garrett Brown prevailing in the men’s pole vault for the Cardinal with a clearance of 17-3 (5.26m), along with running 15.11 in his collegiate debut in the 110-meter hurdles.
