Giving Credit for Photos

Giving proper credit for photography is an industry standard that RunnerSpace does not ignore and reminds its users not to be complacent about when uploading photos to the RunnerSpace network.  For the purpose of this article, "image" and photo" may be used interchangeably, and both are treated equally.  The laws of proper photo accreditation apply to still images taken from a video, as well as graphic images or altered images created artistically or by altering a photo.

Giving proper credit means including the name of the owner of the photo when uploading the photo to RunnerSpace.  Here is how we do it:

To learn more about uploading a photo, click here.

We'll skip ahead to photos that have already been uploaded and appear on your profile.  If you wish to give credit for a single photo, click the edit icon next to the photo listing on your photo backend management page, (to learn more about photo backend management, click here) and enter the name of the photo owner in the Description field.  We typically write "Photo by: Name."

If you want to give credit for an entire album of photos who are under the same owner, either change the name of the album they appear in to say, "Photos by Name" or create a new album, place all of the owners photos into that album and, again, name it accordingly.  This will save you from having to manually enter the owner's name into each photo individually (a project you'll be glad to avoid if you have several hundred photos!), but if one of several of the photos will be featured on other pages, your own homepage, or used elsewhere on the RunnerSpace network, it is best to enter the owners name into the description on each of those photos individually, just to make sure they receive credit when the photo is not viewed in the photos section of your profile where the file name is prominently displayed.

Here is an example of an event page where folders containing photographers names have been organized properly.

The basic rule is this: if you shot it, you own it.  There are exceptions, of course, such as a situation where you have been hired by a company to shoot photos.  At that point, the photos belong to whomever is stated as the owner in the contract, i.e., you, the company that hired you, or you share joint ownership.

That being said, if you did not shoot the photo, you are most likely not the owner.  If you find a photo you would like to upload to RunnerSpace, the responsibility is on you to find the name or company who owns the photo, and at the very least, include their name in the Description field when uploading the photo.  Most often, our members will not be uploading massive numbers of photos sourced from random places requiring the uploader to search high and low for the owner of the photo.  Rather, a RunnerSpace user will typically upload either single photos at a time, or a group of photos from the same owner.

Lastly, if you come across a photo on RunnerSpace where the credit is not present, the credit then goes to RunnerSpace.com.  There are many of these, perhaps because this writer is guilty of uploading such unseemly photos that claiming credit was deemed detrimental to any potential career in photography.

A picture is worth a thousand words, don't let any of those words be "cease and desist!" (A little legal joke to end a fairly dry, but very important, tutorial!)
